San Antonio

With Seaworld out of the way we decided to head into the centre of San Antonio for an explore there. When we searched to see what was on in the area we found a Folk Festival which Tal misheard as F*ck Festival, Freud would have had something to say about that!

We decided to ignore the Folk thing as there were no rides and instead headed into the centre of the city for the Alamo and Riverwalk.

OMG!, It's a bear!

San Antonio has a walking area called the Riverwalk, which in a country that requires a car to get from A to B most of the time immediately makes this a place that stands out to me. We decided to walk along it to the Tower of the Americas.

That's our destination.

Unlike Lord of the Rings, the birds here were too small to fly us there.

Whilst not Venice it was still a nice walk with plenty of shade.

We stopped off at a nice restaurant for a quick bite to eat and to watch some of the football tournament that was taking place whilst we were out here. I was a little intrigued by just how long their Happy Hour was...

This sculpture is called La Antorcha de la Amistad (Friendship Torch) has been in the city since 2002 and serves as a perfect sign for a meeting point.

Closeby is the Alamo church, a historic landmark that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

During the Texas Revolution this place was defended by a small number of men including Jim Bowie and David Crockett for 13 days but were ultimately overwhelmed by the numbers. However the backlash that followed led to a huge rise in public support to their cause which helped shift the overall tide of the battle.

You're not allowed to take photos in the church but you can in the grounds. A little sentimental but didn't stop some people taking photos with their phones. I guess that becomes harder to police as phones become more smaller.

A strange cactus.

There are restrooms for women, men and small people in wheelchairs.

This is the Hero's of the Alamo memorial.

For those that want to do rides, in a shameless attempt to get tourists to part with their dollars more there are a number of "attractions" closeby. Amongst the selection are a Tussauds, a Ripley's and a Guiness Book of Records and the dark ride is something called Tomb Rider 3D.

The Hulk looked a little camp.

Along the Riverwalk we found some baby ducks. Awwwwwwww!!!

and some nice murals.

Some statues that hark back to the time this place belonged to the Mexicans.

We're nearly at the Tower.

Segway tours, great but oh, so lazy...

The views from the tower were alright, not amazing. Most big US cities are sprawls and San Antonio is no exception. Kudos to Tal for convincing me later that Zombie at Bosque Magico, Monterey was visible from here, and I fell for that.

So, it's just as well I managed to get him to stick his finger in a statues arse.

During dinner I was joined by a duck who stood beside my seat waiting for a nacho. Ducks are way better than gulls (who don't ask) and pigeons who are vermin so I duly obliged and he wolfed it down before tottering off. Perhaps he wanted the salsa too.

For those that want to look ridiculous there are these horse-drawn carriages to get around the city.

Here we are back at the car park where Thomas unwittingly carjacked a couple when he attempted to get into their car rather than our's.

Fortunately we avoided picking up a 1-star rating because no cops saw the felony.

and that was the Riverwalk, definitely the nicest bit of San Antonio and recommended if you want somewhere nice to walk. It is a tourist magnet so expect prices to be a little inflated but it's a nice place to sit and people watch.

Back at the hotel and time to charge everything up. Does this happen to you or is it just me?
