Mile High

Day 16 focused on the parks in and around the city of Denver, the highest city in the U.S. There were 4 parks here, 2 of which I had done before (Lakeside and Elitch Gardens) and 2 smaller ones (Mile High and Heritage Square) that would be new to me.

We were supposed to stay in the Holiday Inn downtown however they'd had some flooding damage and we were moved to the hotel over the road.

This hotel was nicer but didn't have any twin rooms. Something similar happened to us in Ottawa and I slept on a fold-out bed. This time Tal agreed to take that and to give them time to set that up we disappeared out to find a 7/11 for some drinks. In there the server got really arsey with two drunk girls who were trying to buy some beer after the allowed time.

At breakfast there was an interesting pancake photocopier machine!

I've been to Denver before so wasn't too bothered about sightseeing here. Had I woken up a decent time I could have managed a morning walk to check out some art, instead I just photographed this church around the corner from the hotel to make it look like I did some exploring.

Frivolity out of the way our first stop was at a Flea Market in the North-East of Denver, but not just any ordinary flea market; one with a collection of amusement rides including a small rollercoaster.

I thought they'd spelt "vegetables" wrong then realised the market was heavily hispanic.

Due to us having a rather full day we had gotten to the market pretty early and some of the stands were still setting up. It was quickly apparent that the market was large and had quite a random selection of things.

Located in the back right corner of the park you can find the rides.

The coaster looked alright, a slightly extended version of the ride that usually has an Orient Express theming. The dragon train was well done.

The other rides offered nothing for us grown ups. This little ride looked interesting with the differing routes through it though.

The rides open promptly at 10 and because there's no entrance to keep people out they enforce the time by opening up the ticket office last. About 20 minutes prior the staff appear and start opening up the rides in preparation for getting tickets.

Obligatory Tal pano shot of the one ride we did before heading out.

It was only right that we took this photo given events of a few days ago :)

So that was a quick stop, and perfect to plan. It's an easy hit to get if you're in the city and willing to drive out this way. I guess it's also worth a stop if you like flea markets too.
