Six Flags Over Texas

With Sandy Lake out of the way it was time to head to the second of our Six Flags Park. This time the original one, Over Texas.

You know when you're getting close as the rides start to steal the skyline.

Tal and I were able to enter the park immediately. Christof and Thomas were denied entry however as they hadn't registered their card since our visit at Fiesta Texas, something that isn't made clear when they let you enter the first park with no issue. What had also made this odd is that I hadn't registered either but still managed to get in. Clearly the park aren't consistent in how they do this.

Tal and I waited patiently whilst they got their access sorted. In the meantime we stared at a fountain.

After a longer than it should have taken delay the guys were sorted and we were able to hit the park properly. The largest park of the trip with regards to coasters (12 of them), today was going to be a busy day for Tal and Thomas for who the park was all brand new. Christof and I were lucky that we only had a single new coaster to pick up.

The Boomtown section of the park was new since our last visit but there wasn't much of interest in there.

In a weak Justice League association. Aquaman is one of their water splash rides.

Justice League Battle for Metropolis is a new dark ride that Six Flags rolled out to a few of their parks in 2016.

It's pretty similar to Spiderman at IOA in that you ride a scoop type train with 3D glasses through a mixture of 3D screens and real visual effects. This however does offer some shooting, which Spiderman lacks.

Pacing is a little out and there are some dead spots, and on one occasion one of the screens didn't work. The shooting focuses you away from the overall ride experience and it's not clear if there is a strategy that rewards the participants with a higher score. Completely unrelated to the ride review does Batman go to the toilet in his suit or not? This was the sort of thing we discussed when we were having to queue.

Pandemonium or Twix the Coaster is a shameful way to advertise a product.

Oh no, Club 5's counterparts were present in this park.

They say everything is bigger in Texas and with ridiculous things like this, I do have to concede to being jealous of structures like this. Back home the NIMBYs stop things like this being built.

I like these cute little Batjet-themed cars.

The first coaster for Christof and I was the Mr Freeze coaster which is a super launched Premier ride.

That's the spike where the train slows down before returning to the station in reverse.

We met up with Tal and Thomas in the Batman queue line.

We encountered a bit of a delay here due to somebody puking on the train and it needing to be cleaned. In some parks they'll just throw water on it and run it a few times to clean it but here they went through some lengthy decontamination routine. To pass the time we mocked Tal's baby talk which I heard him doing via skype in the morning. I can't remember the exact phrase but it sounded like dada dada daadaa daadaa daa daadaa daa.

An interesting poster that aims to remind you just how rubbish you are!

The park is mostly concrete, deflecting the heat exactly like the previous Six Flags park but I did find this one shady spot with foliage around the rear of the park.

A pretty cool park prize if you can win on this silly game. Don't fret if you don't win!

A temporary inflatable structure housing a little arcade where you can play the latest Street Fighter game, which I'm utterly terrible at.

The VR conversion has taken place at this park too and they've decided to install it on their Schwarzkopf coaster Shockwave. Now rebranded to New Revolution this attraction is themed to an Independence like alien attack on the planet, and it worked really well - much better than the Superman coaster in the Fiesta Texas park. During the lift hill you're being elevated to the launch deck on a battleship and you can aim a cannon with your eyes and fire by tapping the headset.

Again, throughput us terrible, not helped by this ride undergoing a period of downtime just like Batman although with no evidence of puking; they wouldn't explain the reason. We did see one engineer take his time to appear and then stare at the ride before walking off again.

It's a shame because the ride is running amazingly well, which isn't really a surprise considering it's pedigree (it's a Schwarzkopf). Once again Six Flags killing their good running rides.

They ought to consider calling it devolution as it is a backstep.

We made our way over to the Western themed part of the park towards the new coaster that we had to get.

Last time we visited this park the Texas Giant was an atrocious coaster that I commented would benefit from having a dentists next door. Rather than do that the park chose to hand the coaster over to Rocky Mountain and said "make it better".

and they've done a good job with a machine that offers lots of airtime rather than pain.

However it wasn't as exciting as Iron Rattler, and I was expecting a bit more from it. Don't get me wrong, it's way better than the ride that used to run here but the pacing is predictable fan turn, after fan turn for the first half and airtime hills for the second.

I subsequently realised this was the first Rocky Mountain project and they clearly played it safe with this ride. Their success with this and Outlaw Run must have led to them being confident to do more with their designs.

Buy a gun that your kids will love!

Titan is a little difficult to find with the entrance now found though an entrance to the picnic pavilion. The ride is holding up amazingly well and is still an intense coaster and still the best coaster in the park - yep, I'm saying this is still better than the RMC ride next door.

The park, perhaps knowing just how powerful this ride can be, have made headache pills available in the Titan gift shop.

The park have a giga!

I remember La Vibora as being the first coaster I rode here on the last visit but also because it was one where I somehow managed to cut my leg. I didn't repeat that this time. At this time of day the park was ridiculously hot and with the queue line not moving quickly, this part of the day became a bit of a struggle. That is now the memory I'll take from this ride.

The park has another giga!

With Christof choosing to keep his feet on the ground I had a quick trip up the tower ride to get some photos of the ride from on high.

This poster is nowhere near the VR Shockwave travesty. It'd obviously upset customers in that section of the park.

A crap photo of their boat dark ride, which despite the Loony Toons additions is a relaxing ride and a good place to escape the excessive heat.

and missed by the others the park does acknowledge their ride history with a small museum display tucked away in a quiet corner. As much as I don't like the Six Flags chain this is a nice touch.

and that was Six Flags Over Texas. A park we managed to leave early and have an OK time at. Despite the park's poor operations the newbies were able to ride everything in good time. I found myself spending most of my time on the Justice League dark ride, only because it offered a means to escape the heat and the queue was fairly short.

  1. The Justice League ride was installed in 2015. I respectfully disagree on the best coaster at my home park. Shockwave is it. There are positives and negatives on the VR addition. The negative is that capacity is even worse than it had been. When I worked there in the early 80s, we could push 1400 per hour through. I doubt it gets 500 per hour now. The positive twist to that, is that the ride getting less cycles per year will extend its life a few seasons.
