White Sands National Monument

Day 14, and our final day of the second week would take us from Alamagordo, New Mexico up to Pueblo, Colorado. We had 2 parks on the route: Cliff's Amusement Park and Pueblo City Park and we did have some sightseeing planned to fill the day, however we were all in agreement that we wanted to see the White Sands Desert. So we agreed to drop a couple of things and wake up extra early to squeeze a visit in...So we didn't get off to the best start when I managed to sleep in!

Located a little west of the Holloman Air Force Base, the White Sands National Monument is a huge expanse of white sand desert (the clue is in the name). It costs 5 dollars per person to entrance and there's a mixture of driving roads if you just want a quick hit like we did, and hikes if you're particularly mental. There were some people actually doing that complete with sleds - nutters!

An easy way to make a band photo.

At times the visuals looked like you were on another planet.

I thought I'd go for a distant shot. Perhaps a little too far.

Could be a DJ publicity photo

The sand is mostly gypsum.

The remnants of some silly creature that seems able to survive out here.

and that was the White Sands. It was amazing and ought to be a UNESCO place but some further investigation highlighted that someone passed a law to make it illegal to do so as it would threaten what the air force base operations; a little bit silly admittedly.

Being a desert it obviously gets extremely hot so I think we did it right in getting there early and before the sun gets going.
